Couples experiencing burnout don't have the capacity for connection.

Date nights are often recommended for couples looking to reconnect. And that's great! Date nights can help you feel refreshed, restore, and in love again with your partner. However, if you're experiencing burnout... date nights probably won't help sustained relationship change.

What is relationship burnout? Relationship burnout is a state of emotional, psychological, and physical exhaustion. If you have experienced burnout at your job, it is a very similar feeling. It can impact both partners and signals a deeper emotional fatigue.

Have you ever thought that you have nothing left to give in your relationship, or that you're running on empty? Those can both be signs of relationship burnout. Burnout even has physical symptoms - fatigue, sleep issues, headaches.

Burnout can occur at any stage in the relationship. For more information about relatonship burnout, click here.

The problem with date nights as a "treatment" (for lack of a better word) for burnout, is that date nights are about connection; in burnout, you are depleted past connection and lack capacity for connection to be meaningful.

Addressing burnout in relationships requires more than time together, it requires change.

Things that might help?

-Honest conversations about expectations

-Rebalancing emotional labor and responsibilities

-Addressing resentment

-Creating emotional safety

All of these move beyond shared experiences.

When couples feel supported, heard, and emotionally safe, shared time feels restorative instead of performative. Connection flows more naturally when both partners have the capacity to be present. That's when date nights might start feeling connecting and restoring again!
