This blog should be taken as psycheducational material only and not as therapeutic or medical advice.

Do you set New Year's Resolutions? Studies show that around 38-45% of Americans do; but by mid-January, only about 10% of people have stuck to them (Source: Pew Research). There are reasons for this, and we review SMART goal setting in another blog, but today I want to give an alternative to New Years Resolutions: a focus word of the year.
The idea with a focus word is that you pick a word to describe what you want to work on, achieve, accomplish, etc that calendar year. An example might be "wellness". If you chose "wellness" as your focus word, living this out throughout the year might look like finding a therapist (heyyy....), finally going to that doctor's appointment you've been putting off, making choices to eat more nourishing foods, drinking more water, etc. It's very similar to a New Year's Resolution, but I think there's more grace. You aren't necessarilry stressing about exercising every single day or never having a snack; you're making conscious decisions to take steps to improve your overall well-being.
With that said, I'd like to give a list of example focus words that you might consider for the upcoming year, as well as what this could look like for you!:
