Today is World Mental Health day! World Mental Health day is celebrated annually on October 10 and is a global day for advocacy, awareness, and education on mental health. In honor of this important day, we thought we'd spend some time chatting about what some simple, actionable steps are you can take today for your mental health.
Take a moment to breathe. In through your nose...hold...and out. Repeat... Repeat again. Notice how your body is relaxing? Taking just a few moments to breathe can help your nervous system calm down and reset your mood.
Reach out to someone you trust. Connection is a strong protective factor for mental health. Take a few minutes to talk to a friend, family member, loved one, etc.
Get outside. A short walk, soaking up the sun, noticing the cool breeze, or even observing the cold. Nature has an incredible way of restoring us and helping us feel better! In the long-term, nature is even associated with improved sleep, a better tolerance for stress, and decreased levels of stress and anxiety.
Write it down. Journaling helps externalize and organize your thoughts and feelings and can provide clarity.
Go to bed. Are you getting enough sleep at night? It is estimated that 30% of adults in the United States are not getting enough sleep. A lack of sleep can significantly impact mental health: emotional regulation becomes much more difficult when you're tired.
Do Something that Feels Good. It doesn't need to be complicated! Take a moment to reflect on something that would really feel good. Taking a mindful sip of coffee? Jamming to your favorite song? Jumping jacks? Cooking something nourishing? Lighting a candle?
There we have it! Six quick, actionable tips that you can do today that will impact your mental health. Which one will you try?
