October is "Talk About Your Meds Month". The purpose of this advocacy month is to encourage open dialogue around medication and encourage increased awareness of side effects, proper administration, and more.

As a therapy practice, many of our clients take medications for various concerns. Just as no two people share the exact same life story, no two healing journeys look the same. For some, talk therapy and lifestyle changes are enough. For others, medication can be an important piece of the puzzle. Both approaches can complement one another, and both are worthy of respect and discussion.

Our clinicians at our practice take a holistic approach to therapy. This means we treat you as a whole person, and believe that many pieces go into healing. Medication, nutrition, connection with others, exercise, as well as talk therapy.

If medication is part of your mental health journey, or if you are considering it, here are some questions to consider asking your provider:

-What are some side effects of this medication?

-How will I know that it's working?

-How long does it take to start working?

-What lifestyle changes would you recommend to maximize the effectiveness of this medication?

-What do I do if I miss a dose?

-What should I do if I experience a crisis while on this medication?

-How often will I be seen?

-Will you collaborate with my amazing Caring Conversations therapist? (And other members of your support team).

-Is it better to take this medication in the morning or evening?

-What are the interactions with my other medications?

-Can I drink alcohol or caffeine on this medication?

-How long will I be on this medication?

Please note, we are not prescribers and none of this should be taken as medical advice, but more of tips and resources to guide your journey.

We have met with three agencies that offer mediation management:

If medication is part of your mental health journey, you aren't alone, and there is no shame. Let's work this month to raise awareness, break stigma, and create a healthier community overall.
