How to find a therapist?

This is a fantastic question, and its a super important question: finding a therapist that's a good fit for you is essential to how successful therapy will be! But many people don’t know where to start. A google search will definitely bring up names, but this gets overwhelming quickly.

Before starting your search, spend some time reflecting on what you're looking for in a therapist. Are you wanting someone who specializes in trauma? Someone who counsels from a particular spiritual lense? Do you want in person or virtual sessions, or are you okay with a mix of both? Are you using healh insurance or self pay? Spend some time thinking about the answers to these questions as they will guide your search.

Here are several ideas other than google to try:

-Think about who could connect you to your ideal therapist. If you are struggling postpartum, for example, you could try asking your OB, your doula, a midwife, etc.

-Ask friends, family, coworkers, or your employer for a recommendation. If you are a student check with your college, high school guidance counselor, etc.

-Ask your PCP, psychiatrist, physical therapist, or other medical provider.

-Use an online directory such as PsychologyToday or TherapyDen. These sites have several filters you can use to narrow down your search.

-If you are religious, check with your place of worship for a referral.

-Call the number on your insurance card (this is particularly helpful if you are having a hard time finding someone who accepts your insurance.)

-If you are open to virtual sessions, expand your search. If you are looking for a specialist and can't find one in your area, you might be able to find one in another city, across the state, or even in a different state.

-Check with non-profits or other community groups. Think: the local YMCA, food banks, library, outreach programs.

-Attend a local mental health themed event. Depending on your location, check out Eventbrite, facebook, community boards, etc. You may find an event that local practices are at and can meet some therapists in person.

-Ask for referrals on social media. I am not exaggerating when i see multiple posts a week in various facebook groups asking for recommendations on therapists!

-Check your social media. You might be following a therapist in your state with availability!

-If you do turn to google, get specific about your search. "Therapist near me" will yield different reasults than "therapy for children in greensburg", or "eating disorder specialists ".

There you have it! What did I miss? Let me know in the comments!
