How to Find a Therapist?

If you've landed on this particular blog, congrats! You've decided to take an important first step on your mental health journey, yay!
It can be overwhelming to know where to begin, so here we hope to shed some light on how exactly to find a therapist.
Google/ChatGPT
You've probably already done this, and depending on where you live, you may have gotten almost too many results. Try googling specific phrases - "trauma therapy near me", "ADHD therapist", "couples therapy". Those specific queries should get you some results tailored to what you're looking for
Family, friends, co-workers
Have a friend who's been seeing a therapist, and you've noticed they seem a lot happier? Ask who they're seeing. If its too "weird"? That's ok- ask that therapist who they recommend.
Facebook/Social Media
We see posts literally daily of people looking for a therapist. If you don't feel comfortable posting (understandable!!), use the search features to filter out some options.
Insurance
Your insurance card will have a number to call, usually on the back of the card. They can give you option that are in-network. This option doesn't really filter out therapists that aren't a fit for you, but it can be helpful if you're struggling to find someone in network.
Your Doctor or Other Community Supports
Your primary care doctor, your gynecologist, your kids pediatrician most likely has a whole bunch of referral sources. If you go to church, or a food bank, or have a child in daycare, see if any of those resources have referrals. You might be surprised.
Other Therapists
Let's say you have a therapist, or have a consultation with a therapist, and realize you and that therapist either aren't a fit, doesn't take your insurance, specialize in what you need, etc., ask them for referrals.
Psych Today and Other Referral Networks
Psychology Today has directories of therapists. You can apply various filters (insurance, gender, specialty, type of therapy, etc). Other similar sites exisit, including Therapy Den, Catholic Therapist , and Marriage.com .
